What is a Digital Key and how does it work?
Imagine opening doors with your mobile phone instead of using standard keys or plastic keycards. Digital Keys live on our mobile devices or smart watches. They can be used with a smartphone, tablet, and other wearable tech to get into a room or a building, eliminating the need to carry physical keys or remember keycards.
If you’ve ever lost a set of keys, you’re well aware of the benefits of a keyless access system. Physical keys and keycards are bulky, frustrating, and easy to lose.
Digital Key technology generates an encrypted Digital Key, and then delivers this to the smartphone (or other smart devices) of the authorized user. When placed in front of the correct door lock, the app can then transmit this key and give the user instant access.
This ensures that only the right people can access the building or room in question. Processes such as check-ins and deliveries can be drastically shortened with the use of keyless access systems. If you're unsure whether your door lock supports Digital Keys, check with your lock provider, some offer upgrade options for older models.
Types of Digital Keys
FLEXIPASS offers three different types of Digital Keys to meet every hotel or property’s unique needs. Each has its own strengths, outlined below:
Wallet Keys
A Wallet Key is a digital access credential stored directly in your smartphone’s or smartwatch’s native wallet app. It allows you to unlock doors without opening a separate app.
This type of Digital Key uses your phone’s built-in secure element for storage and doesn’t require any additional installations. Wallet Keys are all about efficiency and simplicity.
What do you need to activate Wallet Keys?
First, your door lock provider needs to accept Wallet Key technology. Thereafter choose a Wallet Key provider (developing company) which is reliable and integrated with your locks.

Webkeys
A Webkey is a browser-based access solution that doesn’t require any app installation. Users receive a secure link via email, text, WhatsApp, or other messaging platforms.
When opened, the link launches a mobile-responsive website or progressive web app that allows users to unlock the door with just a tap. An active internet connection is required when accessing the credential.
Webkeys are an innovative type of Digital Key that streamline access without the need for APP download.
